GearEye

User Manual

Thank you for purchasing the GearEye. Please read the instructions below to enjoy using it fully. The Kit contains the GearEye’s RFID scanner operating at 902.7 to 927.7 MHz, and a collection of various passive UHF RFID tags. The GearEye app and the scanner device help organizing items into specific lists, tracking on-demand either the entire group of items or an individual object, ensuring the tagged items are around. Works with Android or iPhone mobile devices that support BLE 5.0 and later.

Charging

Input: PD 27W max, 5V-5A/9V-3A/15V-1.9A/20V-1.4A; Output: PD 20W max, 5V-4A/9V-2.2A/15V-1.3A/20V-1A

You should fully charge your GearEye at least 1-2 hours before first use. The battery status will appear on the app’s upper toolbar.
The charging USB type C port is located on the bottom of the GearEye device. Any standard charging/data cable for USB type C can be used.
NOTE: The extensive app usage and frequent tracking will decrease your phone's and GearEye device's battery level.

ON/OFF states, Reset and Sleep mode

  • Turn On the GearEye Scanner device for the first time or after the Power Shutdown by connecting the Type C charging cable to the USB port in the bottom area.
  • A continuous 10-second press of its upper push-button will cause a Power Shutdown. We recommend not using this feature unless you intend to preserve the device’s battery for future usage.
  • Automatic Sleep mode: the GearEye scanner will automatically enter the Sleep state after 15 minutes, if it is disconnected from a phone. This interval can be changed in the app’s Settings screen. You can also prevent the automatic Sleep by setting the Sleep timeout to 0.
  • Sleep on-demand: press the upper push-button shortly for 1-second to enter or exit the Sleep mode.
  • NOTE: if the GearEye device is in the Sleeping mode, it will not be able to connect to a phone. Press the GearEye device’s upper push-button to wake it up and resume connection.
Although Sleep mode uses low energy consumption, it still may eventually drain the battery.
  • Reset of the GearEye device can be triggered with a 5-second upper push-button press. We recommend using this feature only if the device is malfunctioning.

Tags selection and placement proper tag selection is crucial for its successful scanning later. To sustain optimal communication between a tag and the GearEye scanner, take into account the physical space available for tag placement, surface material to which they are attached, and the contents of a tagged container. Along with regular tags of different sizes for non-metal items such as glass, plastic, or wood, GearEye also provides on-metal tags to avoid RF interference with metal or liquid containers. Before actually sticking a tag to an object, make a simple test and check that after just placing the tag on the item’s surface, the tag’s scanning range is sufficient for you. The tags are hard to peel off after adhering.

LED indication and troubleshooting A visual LED indication appears in different colors, either steady or blinking, on the upper part of the GearEye device in the following conditions:

  • Green - Charging, disconnected from the app
  • Red Blinking - Scanning is active
  • Red Steady - Initialization error => Reset the device
  • Blue - Connected, not charging
  • Violet Blinking - Low battery => recharge the device
  • Turquoise - Charging & Connected to the app
  • Orange Blinking - Malfunctioning or overheating => stop charging, sleep
  • Yellow - Transition to OFF or Reset
  • Pale - Normal battery level, not charging, not connected

Proper use

  • The phone needs to be close enough to the GearEye device to stay connected.
  • The GearEye device works optimally in the free space. However, it can be placed on a non-metal surface, inside a bag, or held in hand, like in the picture on the right.
  • Keep GearEye at a minimum of 20 cm distance from a body, head, or another person.
  • When GearEye is operating, do not hold the cord in hand.
  • Avoid covering the air slots on the LED light area at the top and around the USB slot
  • If GearEye cannot find a tag, try to change the device’s position and orientation, or gently wave it around.
  • Please refrain from folding an antenna. The optimal mode for scanning RFID tags is when the antenna is straight.
  • GearEye works better if it is far from any metal object or surface.
  • There are certain environmental conditions in which the GearEye will not be able to scan items properly, especially when the items are near metal objects. Double-check your items to make sure they are around.
  • Keep GearEye away from water or other liquid drops.
  • Do not fold or pull the cord to avoid mechanical damage. Avoid shaking or dropping the device.

Quick start guide

  • Start the GearEye app on your phone. You will be requested to register with an email for the first time.
  • Turn ON the GearEye scanner device for the first time by plugging the Type C cable into its USB slot.
  • Bluetooth connection: The app will Pair with the GearEye scanner automatically. If it doesn’t happen for more than 2 minutes, verify that your phone’s Bluetooth is enabled and press the sign in the GearEye app’s upper toolbar.
  • To work correctly, the GearEye app will ask permission to access your phone's location services because it stores the last item’s location upon each RFID scanning round
  • Stick the selected RFID tag on your item, as described in the Tags Selection and Placement section.
  • Adding an item: Press + to Scan your item’s tag, ensuring that other RFID tags are distant and. Give this item a name, and take its photo – now GearEye is ready to monitor it.
  • The app helps locating an individual missing item by increasing or decreasing the sound's volume depending on the distance to the item.
  • You can group your items into lists, and scan them altogether or individually.
  • Press the Scan button to check your gear, and the GearEye app will mark missing items with X and successfully identified items with V. The item check-mark can also be changed manually.
  • The GearEye app will need your permission to run in the background to track items. The app will monitor your items, check that everything is around and alert if anything is left behind.
